Travel Guides for Season
Season
When visiting Nyingchi Lhasa and other locations in the fall, you should pack warm clothes, wear a heavy jacket and pants, and autumnal pants are essential. The temperature is not too low during the day, but the temperature is low at night, so it is recommended to stay indoors as much as possible. If you go to the high-altitude Everest base camp, Ali and other places, you should bring thermal underwear, sweatpants, thick sweaters, thick down jackets and other warm clothes, the temperature in these places may drop to minus ten degrees at night.
Lhasa can be visited all year round, but the best time to visit is usually from April to October in the spring, summer and autumn. Although summer (July-August) is the rainy season in Lhasa, the rain mostly occurs at night, and the weather is mostly sunny during the day, which is perfect for sightseeing.
The best time to visit Mount Kailash and Everest Base Camp for sightseeing and trekking coincides with spring (April to June) and autumn (September to October). Tibet experiences abundant sunshine, comfortable temperatures, good visibility, and stunning scenery at these times. In addition, visitors may acclimate more easily due to the increased oxygen concentration, which provides for a more leisurely trekking experience.
In terms of religious significance, another optimal time to visit Mount Kailash is during the Saga Dawa Festival, which falls on the 15th day of the fourth month of the Tibetan lunar calendar each year. This festival celebrates the birth, enlightenment, and parinirvana of Gautama Buddha. During the festival, many devotees and tourists join the pilgrimage to Mount Kailash. It’s a special occasion where you can witness various Buddhist rituals and celebratory events.
Spring (March to May): Spring in Tibet offers pleasant weather with comfortable temperatures and breathtaking views of the plateau. Especially in Nyingchi, peach blossoms bloom, painting the entire valley pink, creating a stunning sight.
Summer (June to August): Summer in Tibet is a paradise for outdoor enthusiasts. Hiking and camping in places like Mount Everest and Namtso are excellent choices. However, it’s important to note that the weather during this time can be hot, so sun protection and heat precautions are necessary.
Autumn (September to November): Autumn in Tibet brings cooler temperatures and clear blue skies, perfect for long hikes and photography. Additionally, the autumn leaves in regions like Nyingchi and Shannan are incredibly charming.
Winter is actually a great time to visit Tibet. Firstly, there are fewer tourists, which makes it perfect for taking photos and visiting popular attractions. Additionally, the Tibet Tourism Bureau introduces winter travel policies every year, which reduce costs and increase cost-effectiveness.
When traveling to Tibet in winter, it’s advisable to bring thermal underwear, fleece jackets, windbreakers, thick down jackets, cotton-padded trousers, cotton shoes, hats, gloves, and masks for warmth. During the day, you can wear thin outerwear and bask in the sun at Barkhor Square. However, temperatures are lower in the mornings and evenings, so it’s recommended to layer up with sweaters and down jackets for warmth. Thick sports pants layered with warm autumn trousers are suitable for bottoms, while shoes with added cotton and hard soles are recommended.
Traveling from April to June and from September to October is the best time to visit the Everest Base Camp in Tibet. Even though summer is Tibet’s busiest travel season, it also happens to be the rainy season, which makes it a less ideal time to visit Mount Everest because clouds and mist can occasionally hide it.
However, the summer rain (July and August) is not as bad as you may have considered. Monsoon rain shouldn’t be a major concern for you. It’s not a relentless downpour or an extreme downpour that never stops; rather, it’s merely brief downpours or slicing rain that occurs in the afternoon or at night.
Meanwhile, sunshine consistently follows the occasional rain. The sun starts to shine considerably brighter, and occasionally a rainbow appears in the clear blue sky. Another amazing panoramic image to capture on camera is the narrow mountain peak veiled in clouds, adding more mystery to every corner of the revered Mount Everest.
The best time to visit the sacred lake Namtso is from June to October. During this period, the weather is mild, and the scenery is magnificent, allowing visitors to admire the clear lake waters, majestic snow-capped mountains, vast grasslands, and beautiful flower fields. From November to May of the following year, the lake is frozen and the temperatures are low, making travel unfavorable due to poor road conditions. Therefore, if planning a trip to Namtso, it is advisable to choose a travel period between June and October.
The best time for self-driving tours to Tibet is typically from April to June and from September to October, which coincide with Tibet’s early summer and late autumn seasons. During these periods, the weather in Tibet is pleasant with moderate temperatures, providing ideal conditions for enjoying the stunning plateau landscapes. However, road conditions can be challenging during the summer months (July to August) and winter (November to March) due to heavy rain and snow, making self-driving less advisable during these times.
