Lulang forest
The Nyingmapa sect, or Nyingma school, has a significant role in Tibetan Buddhism. Founded in the 8th century by Padmasambhava, also known as Guru Rinpoche, it’s dubbed the “Ancient School” for its early Tibetan establishment. Emphasizing oral teachings and hidden treasures, Nyingma incorporates elements from pre-Buddhist Bon religion, reflecting Tibetan culture’s syncretic nature. With a focus on nature and local deities, Nyingma respects the natural world, aligning with Bon’s reverence for nature spirits. This integration underscores Tibetan Buddhism’s adaptability and inclusivity.

Ranwu lake, Bayi
In the morning, we reach Midui Glacier, which rises to 6385 meters above sea level at its crest, while its lowest point stands at 2900 meters. Its shape resembles two chairs side by side, making it unique. Despite its low altitude among glaciers of similar latitudes, it is considered a top-tier natural wonder globally. In 2005, China National Geography Magazine ranked it highly in a beauty contest. The glacier boasts a distinctive, graceful arc and is surrounded by majestic snow-capped mountains, Tibetan-style houses, and herds of yaks and sheep. Wildlife such as argalis and monkeys are frequently spotted in the vicinity.

Ranwu lake, Bayi
Afterward, we’ll visit Rawo-tso, known as Ranwu Lake in Chinese, a stunning fusion of the Swiss Alps’ snow-capped peaks and glaciers with the picturesque streams of Jiuzhaigou in central China. Located approximately 130 km from Pomi in the Village of Ran, Ranwu Lake is the largest lake in southeast Tibet. Situated at an altitude of 3,800 meters above sea level, it covers an expansive water area of 22 square kilometers. En route from Pasho in Chamdo along the perilous Sichuan-Tibet Highway 318, you’ll catch a glimpse of the lake. This highway is renowned as one of the most dangerous in China. We’ll spend the night at a guesthouse by the tranquil shores of Ranwu Lake.

Lake Draksum-tso

In the afternoon, we’ll continue our journey to visit Lake Draksum-tso, also known as Lake Basum-tso. This serene lake, surrounded by breathtaking landscapes, holds significance in Kham region’s semi-mythical history and its connection to Guru Rinpoche. Upon arrival, we’ll take a ferry ride from the southern shore of the lake to explore Tsodzong Monastery, likely the highest point of interest in the area.

Following lunch, we’ll explore the revered Jokhang Temple, founded by King Songtsen Gampo in the mid-7th century. Today, it stands as the holiest site in Tibet, attracting pilgrims from across the region. Our day concludes with a visit to Barkhor Street in the evening, providing a glimpse into Lhasa’s vibrant cultural scene.
