Today’s tour will begin at the Potala Palace, the winter residence of the Dalai Lama. This historic site has been in operation since the 7th century, established by Tibet’s 33rd great king. Among its most treasured features are the gilded burial stupas of former Dalai Lamas and the meditation cave associated with the 33rd king.
Following lunch, visitors will head to the Jokhang Temple, which was also founded by the 33rd great king in the 7th century to advance Buddhism. Inside, you’ll find an esteemed statue of Buddha Sakyamuni as a twelve-year-old, regarded as one of the most revered artifacts in Tibetan Buddhism. Surrounding the temple is Barkhor Street, where you can join pilgrims and locals in kora (a sacred circumambulation) and explore shops for souvenirs.

Drak Yerpa, Ganden Monastery
In the morning, you will embark on a journey to Drak Yerpa, a significant site in Tibetan Buddhism located on a hillside in the Yerpa Valley, approximately 30 km northeast of Lhasa. This ruggedly scenic area features over 80 meditation caves, some thought to date back to ancient times. Exploring the entire complex, which includes chapels and meditation caves, requires trekking.
Later in the day, we will travel to Ganden Monastery, one of the prestigious “Three Great” Gelugpa monasteries founded by the notable Tsongkhapa in 1409. A captivating aspect of this visit is the opportunity to trek along the Lingkor (the circular path) around the monastery, where you can observe a crack in the rock that is believed to have been miraculously made by Tsongkhapa, as well as his meditation cave, which offers breathtaking views.
